The successful candidate will be training with our ECE Forest Practitioners, organizing and implementing a stimulating, dynamic forest preschool programme that encourages a holistic view of child development. We are expanding to a second site in Langley, 2 days per week with 3 hour morning and afternoon classes. Outdoor Experience Days Leader

Langley Forest School is looking for an Outdoor Experience Day Leader for the 2020/2021 school year. If you love the outdoors, are energetic and have experience working with and teaching young children and are looking for part-time work, LFS is looking for you!
To guide and instruct 5 to ~ 7-year-old children (Kindy ready to Grade 2) in a Forest Canada inspired outdoor education by creating opportunities to spend more time playing and learning directly from nature. The successful candidate will utilize a play-based, child-emergent pedagogy through regular, repeated access to a natural space (Williams Park), working to embed a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship into the curriculum. The successful candidate will work with the children for four and a half hours on Fridays, in a 10 class series in each of two terms (Fall – Sept mid to Nov mid and Spring Apr mid to Jun mid). Children are in attendance from 9:30 to 2:00. The Leader will be available for set up for 30 min prior and 30 min post as needed; a total of 1.5 hours will be paid for each day over and above instructional time for the purposes of preparation, risk assessment, parent interaction, clean up and other tasks as directly related to the purposes of the position. Extra hours are available for inservice and staff meetings.The successful candidate will:

  • Instill a love of and respect for nature by providing play and place-based learning using hands-on, student-led activities
  • Use provided curriculum materials to plan, prepare and carry out play/place based, student led, learning activities using natural items and the natural surroundings.
  • Gather all necessary materials prior to the start of the session.
  • Provide a safety site check each Friday prior to the arrival of students.
  • Work with parents who will each volunteer to attend one day per term to provide classroom assistance.

Qualifications and Attributes 

  • Previous work in an outdoor setting is preferred, a love of the outdoors is essential. Commitment to continuing education and certification in outdoor settings is an asset (forest practitioner, outdoor educator, forestry, environmental studies etc).
  • Ability to utilize the natural environment with outside the box thinking, flexibility and improvisation skills. An unwavering commitment to child-emergent, play-based learning is imperative.
  • Experience teaching primary students in a multi-age setting, specifically experience working with small class sizes is preferred
  • Knowledge of the BC Kindergarten and Grade 1 Integrated Resource Package, as well as the Ministry of Education’s curriculum focusing on core competencies and learning standards, would be an asset
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate
