Learn Outside

Langley Forest School is a play-based school based out of Williams Park in Langley, BC. Our school serves as an extension of the home, developing and nurturing values that will prepare your child for life – socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually. We believe that not only do children thrive in a play-based learning environment, but that extensive time outdoors can only serve to enhance their learning.

Today’s children are spending less time outside and more time indoors engaged in technology-driven activities; and we believe that as parents and educators, it is our responsibility to steer our children away from this “nature-deficit-disorder” (Last Child Left in the Woods by RICHARD LOUV – 2005).

Our forest school programme serves to reconnect children with our ever changing environment, while creating a base of knowledge surrounding the importance of community and sustainability. The first of its kind in the Fraser Valley, our school meets a child’s need for self-esteem, leadership skills, and kindergarten readiness, in addition to meeting a community need for alternative school options.

We are a non-profit school, managed by a board, many of whom are our parents. Our fully licensed ECE teachers and OED Leader develop an outdoor curriculum that is play-based, place-based and child emergent.

  • Forest School has been life-giving for our child. Before he started, he was struggling with anxiety, had trouble with self regulation and constant over-stimulation in a preschool classroom setting. He was attending Occupational Therapy (OT) and had difficulty with fine motor and gross motor control (he was learning how to manage zippers and how to jump) Being outside in the forest…surrounded by calm, learning how his body works and having continual practice of running, climbing, jumping through trails and bushes and branches, grasping an understanding of nature and cycles and belonging. I cannot tell you how much this has changed him and impacted our whole family. He is so much happier. He’s gained so much confidence in his own abilities and is developing greater patience when he has to try again. He no longer attends OT because he surpassed expectations with his progress. He delights us with his observations in nature and the affinity he has developed for the forest around him. Forest school has been an amazing opportunity and we are so thankful for our child’s time with Langley Forest School and the time the Educators have taken with him to help him thrive. ~

  • Our daughter’s experience at Langley Forest School has been great. It has strengthened her love of the outdoors. She is often asking to go to the playground near our house in the pouring rain as it no longer phases her. She has also developed some great observational skills, exploring the natural world around her. I love the added benefit of not passing germs via preschool toys. There are enough rocks and sticks to go around. The teachers are a great example of adventurous adults. They are very attentive the the needs of the kids in the forest preschool. I would recommend Langley Forest School to anyone with preschool aged children. How great to imagine a whole elementary school outdoors.~

  • I have been with the school for 3 years and not only have my children built great relationships but I have also met many parents throughout the years that have become great friends. My children love the play based structure which is led by an AMAZING teacher. I am very grateful for finding this school.~

    • Our family is absolutely loving this program! Having the freedom to explore and learn all at the same time has instilled confidence in my son. I chose this school because we are an outdoor family ourselves and I wanted my son to become more confident in his environment. The teachers are amazing and truly love what they are doing! I am so happy to have such lovely teachers inspiring my son, instilling confidence, and nurturing. ~
